Wolverine, Saros, and More!?! | Sony State of Play Reactions & Review

Hello everyone! It’s been a minute, hasn’t it? I finally carved out some time to catch up on what’s happening in the gaming world. I saw the Nintendo and Xbox showcases and really wanted to talk about them, but time just got away from me. However, with the Sony State of Play dropping this week, I knew I had to jump on it. I watched it, and oh boy, do I have some thoughts!

Overall, the showcase presented a lot of positive things – many games I’d absolutely love to play if only time were infinite. But alas, we have to pick and choose our battles. Sony definitely showed off some seriously cool titles, so let’s dive into them!

They kicked things off with a bang: Saros! When it first appeared, I had zero expectations, and honestly, no idea what I was looking at. But wow, this game gave me massive Destiny vibes. I’m a huge fan of third-person games set in crazy worlds with epic bosses, and Saros just looks… well, epic! I can totally see myself getting lost in this one.

My biggest beef with shooters like this, though? I genuinely suck playing on a controller. I’m a PC guy at heart, so my first thought watching many of these Sony games is always, ‘Please, please, please get a PC port eventually!’ A lot of them do, and some showcased might even be cross-platform, so there’s hope. I really, really hope Saros gets that PC love, because any shooter needs a keyboard and mouse for me to truly enjoy it. This isn’t something I’d pick up on PS5, but it looked dope, man. It’s got those nice Destiny-esque vibes without being a full-blown RPG, and it looks like something I’d struggle with in the best way. So, Sony, please port Saros to PC!

Next up, there was Last Epoch. This game caught my eye with its sick art style – seriously, it was unique and intriguing. While it’s not typically my kind of game, I know if I started playing it, I’d get completely sucked in. It felt like the kind of title I’d enjoy on a Switch or a handheld, maybe even my phone. It looked quite puzzle-heavy, though, and that’s usually a bit above my IQ pay grade, so I had to pass on that one.

However, watching the trailer, more than anything, it gave me big Golden Axe vibes. I’ve been thinking a lot about Golden Axe lately, reminiscing about one of my favorite side-scrolling beat ‘em up arcade games. This felt like a modern, futuristic take on that classic. So, while it’s not for me, that art style and nostalgic hit were awesome!

Then came a curveball that genuinely surprised me: Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 on PS5! What universe have we entered? Has there been another Microsoft Flight Simulator game ported to PS5, or is this part of Microsoft’s new cross-platform strategy? Visually, it didn’t strike me as a PS5 game; the graphics looked almost PS2-era compared to what I know Flight Sim can achieve on high-end PCs. I’ve seen those incredible rigs people set up!

I’m not sure how well this translates to a console, especially a PS5, where you expect more action-oriented or arcade-style games. But kudos to Microsoft for making the move. The reveal that PS VR2 support is coming makes a lot more sense. This game definitely fits better in the VR realm. As a regular PS5 game, though? I probably wouldn’t even download it if it were free.

A new Battlefield title was shown, and while I’m not a huge Battlefield head, I know it’ll be a great shooter. I’ll definitely check it out when it comes to PC, but nothing in this showcase blew me away. Horror games like Halloween the game are great, but I don’t really care for them. This gave me Dead by Daylight vibes – probably a fun multiplayer experience for fans, but not for me. I do love the Michael Myers movies, though! We also saw Nioh 3, which looked like a parry-heavy game, and after playing Nine Souls, I’m getting PTSD just thinking about that right now! As for Final Fantasy Tactics, I’m not going to say anything bad about it just because I don’t want the developers coming after me! Not my game, probably won’t play it, but please, devs, don’t kill me!

I love a good side-scroller, and Chronoscript, the Endless, had a very interesting art style. I’d definitely play it if it were on PC, or if it showed up on PS+. I’m over the 45-hour Metroidvania maze-exploring – give me a linear side-scroller any day!

And then Gran Turismo! I almost feel guilty admitting I’ve never actually played a Gran Turismo game. I just don’t play racing games, but I know it sets the bar for the genre. They even have a movie based on a racer who learned playing Gran Turismo! It’s the benchmark. Maybe with all the speeding tickets I’ve been getting, I should invest in a racing setup and give Gran Turismo a real try. The appeal is clear, and I have zero doubts it lives up to the hype for racing fans. So, to all you gearheads and racing believers, I’m happy for you!

But let’s be real, folks. The main reason I tuned in, the game I am most excited about, the console-mover: Marvel’s Wolverine from Insomniac Games. I adore the Insomniac Spider-Man games, and I love Wolverine as a character. It’s been ages since I’ve played a solid Wolverine game – the last one I truly dove into was way back on the Genesis and SNES in ‘94! I’m absolutely hyped for this.

They’re even talking about it potentially being a PS5 Pro game, which is wild. Honestly, this is one game I will not wait a year for a PC port. Unlike the Spider-Man games, where I sometimes fell behind enough to just wait for the PC version, Wolverine is a day-one purchase for me. I’ll probably buy the physical disc just to add it to my collection.

And the ‘blood tech’ they’re talking about? That sounds like the brutal, unhinged Wolverine we’ve been waiting for! Forget water physics and hair rendering; now it’s all about blood tech, and I’m here for it. Insomniac has my full trust; I already know I’m going to love this. I’ll likely pre-order it and binge it on release day – that’s the kind of gaming excitement I’ve truly missed. Wolverine is the single game that makes the PS5 a must-play console for me.

So, summing it all up, the big standouts from this entire showcase for me were Saros, Chronoscript, and obviously, Wolverine. While Saros and Chronoscript look cool and exciting, they aren’t necessarily day-one buys for me on the PS5. I’d ideally wait for a PC port or for them to hit PS+.

Wolverine, though? That’s a console mover. That’s the game you grab a PS5 just to play, and thankfully, I already have one. I don’t think I’d buy a PS5 Pro specifically for it, as I’m not sure what the Pro will truly offer, but it’s definitely a must-play on the PS5. Everything else, while cool for some, just isn’t really for me. The only downside? We have to wait until 2026 to play Wolverine! You guys are really killing me here, Smalls!

Now, what about you guys? What games really stood out from the Sony State of Play? Is there anything on my list you disagree with, or something you think I should give an honest effort to? Let me know in the comments! I’m always interested to hear from y’all. I need to make more gaming videos; I’ve been slacking and going all over the map with my content. But with winter approaching, it’s time to get back into cozy gaming. Until the next one, have a great one – peace!
