Brutally Honest BattleField 6 RedSec Review

Yo, what is good, man? Let’s talk about Battlefield, particularly Battlefield RedSec, the new BR. I’m not gonna lie, this game is beautiful, even if I’m horrible at it. But when has a new battle royale come out that I’ve been good at right out of the rip? Apex, I was horrible, still am. Fortnite, horrible, still am. Warzone, horrible, obviously still am. So yeah, RedSec is out, it’s beautiful, I enjoy it, and I am horrible at it. I’m still learning what I need to be doing, what class I should be playing.

All that said, there’s something different about this BR, and I don’t know if it’s BR fatigue. I don’t want to think it is, because as much as I can praise this game – and I’ll praise the hell out of it – they did so many things right. So many things that I thought were good changes, things that made this one stand out, especially from Warzone, which it’s obviously going to be compared to. Yet, there’s this lack of dopamine, this lack of rush, or maybe I’m just aging out of BRs, which I very well could be, right?

So, let’s go into what I think this game does brilliantly. For one, you get those mini-missions that pop up about a minute after you drop. I think that’s so much easier than having to go looking for contracts or specific weapons. They’re just there, you can do them, and you get your bonus weapons or whatever skill points it is. I also like that you’re not chasing money in this. The big thing about Warzone is the economy – you’re always trying to find money to buy airstrikes and all that. With RedSec, it’s just straight loot. Do those missions, grab some cool things, so you’re encouraged to do them. If you’re not someone who wants to just run around and engage in straight-up conflict all the time, these missions give you nice little side quests to focus on, which I think is dope. It’s something I remember thinking about for a Halo BR – these zone capture type game modes for gun upgrades. It’s cool to see it implemented here.

I like the way they have that ring of fire just closing in. It feels like a real battle zone where the world around you is crumbling and burning, and eventually you’re just stuck in the middle fighting your enemies. That’s a cool concept. I also like that it’s not one of those gas plays where you can easily make a play out of it. With Apex, you get shields and gas plays are a big part of the game. With Warzone, you have gas masks and gas plays become a big thing. Here, it’s like, no, man. You don’t want to get caught in the gas. Keep moving, keep strategizing, get your position set up early. That’s a cool little change.

The vehicles in RedSec add an interesting element. In games like Call of Duty and even Apex, vehicles are very much about instant transportation – getting from point A to point B, helping you push, getting out of a fight faster. Whereas vehicles here are very much part of the fight. You work to get them because they’re a little more OP. Get that tank going and you’ve got a massive tank that shoots rockets and blows up buildings at your disposal. Even the helicopters aren’t just for flying around the map; they have gunners and machine guns that can quickly knock out team positions. They’re used more strategically, more offensively than in other games, which is really cool.

The buildings breaking is by far one of my favorite things, man. Throw an airstrike on top of a building, a few grenades, and all of a sudden that building is coming down. So, if you have a sniper being annoying, and you can’t get a shot off because he’s in cover? Screw that, man. Just take out his legs, take out that building, watch him fall. It’s also really, really cool graphically and animation-wise when the buildings come down. So, kudos to them for making these bustable and completely breakable environments. I think that’s really cool. Obviously, Fortnite did it first, yeah, Fortnite did do it. So, whatever. But it’s being done here and it’s just really, really cool.

Classes are cool too. I mostly just play Recon or Engineer right now; they’re the only two I’ve been focusing on. Something about playing Support just makes me feel like my job is only going to be to revive people the whole game. Screw that! So, I kind of stay away from Support, even though it’s probably the best one for some groups when I’m the least handy with a gun. Assault? I never really understood their main advantage. But Recon and Engineer, man, you’ve got distinct roles. Engineer: blow things up, open things up, repair things. And Recon: I just like having a UAV at my disposal, that rechargeable drone comes in handy when I’m trying to figure out where people are.

But there are things that annoy me about this game, like the UAVs. Sometimes you don’t see them unless you open up the big map. The mini-map sometimes feels a little useless here. Maybe that’s by intent; maybe they don’t want people just mini-map camping and pushing. They want you to open your big map if you want to see where the action is. Or maybe it’s just a bug they haven’t fixed yet. I don’t know, but I do find the mini-map to be a little useless.

And then there are the gunfights. I’m not going to say this game is slow. It isn’t slow; it’s methodical. You have to have a little more intentionality with your gunfights. But at the same time, there’s something lacking in them for me where there isn’t that rush. I’m not saying you need that ADHD, slide-canceling, bunny-hopping, camera-breaking Call of Duty action, but maybe that’s just the type of movement I’ve gotten used to with Apex and even Fortnite – the sliding and jumping. It all plays into some of the gunfights. Whereas in RedSec, it’s very much about getting a position. You’re not hip-firing too much, though most of my kills come from hip-fire, so I can’t say you’re not at all. But close combat is just really weird here. It feels like you want to be taking gunfights from longer distances. Snipers and ARs feel a bit more useful. That’s just my experience with RedSec; I haven’t played multiplayer at all, so I don’t know if I’m completely off base. But even getting close to someone or trying to push feels like suicide a lot of the time. So maybe that’s by design, where gunfights here have to be a lot more intentional and long-ranging. You have to pick your positions and play the flanks more aggressively than in other BRs.

But again, that’s just me nitpicking. I think this game is going to offer a great break for people who needed one from Warzone, especially since Warzone’s big map and even small map don’t make enough changes often enough to keep the audience craving it. So, I do think this offers a big enough change in approach that a lot of people will love it. I don’t know if Battlefield guys will love it though, because you already see in the forums and on Reddit, they’re like, “Dude, this is going to rob us of the multiplayer experience we were waiting for. All the good stuff is being done on the BR. They’re just going heavy on monetization; this is just going to be a battle pass, skin-heavy game. Give us back that Battlefield of gold!” Whereas other players I can see are like, “Yes, man! Finally, a change-up with new strategies, new metas we’ve got to work out!”

But for me personally – please don’t kill me for saying this – this just isn’t a game I feel like I have to hop on and learn. There are so many other games right now that have that hold on me. Like, I keep watching Arc Raider videos and I’m like, “Dude, I want to play that. That one looks cool!” This is obviously a beautiful game, and as I said, I have very few complaints about what this game needs to do. It’s just… maybe it really is BR fatigue, or maybe it’s just a skill issue where if you don’t have strong gun skill, there’s not much fun to be had overall. I would still rather choose Rebirth or even Fortnite right now. Fortnite’s got their Simpsons things, those collabs are awesome, just exploring those worlds and having fun there. I’m not saying this disparagingly, I’m not trying to knock this game. I think this game is amazing, it looks beautiful, and I am definitely going to play a little bit more of it. But there isn’t that straight dopamine rush or that “I’ve gotta get better at this game” rush that I had when Warzone first came out, or even when Marvel Rivals came out. There isn’t that draw to be on every night just to grind it out. There’s something missing, and I don’t know what it is, because the flow of the game is pretty nice. You’re in gunfights from the start, in the middle, and the gunfights at the end are the best because those ones actually feel like straight cinema – your world is blowing up behind you, the fire is encroaching, it’s high-paced, high-action. But I’ve never had that “I need to jump on this game” type vibe yet. I don’t know how you capture that, how you make that, what that is, or how to describe it, but it was just missing for me personally.
