Don Cherry Was Right - Remembrance Day - Monday!

Good morning, y’all! It’s Monday, and it’s a bleak fall morning – nothing more beautiful than that, in a way. But more importantly, it’s Remembrance Day up here in Canada, a stat holiday for some, unfortunately not for me, but it is what it is.

Remembrance Day is an interesting one. Growing up, I feel like it was definitely more honored. I remember Don Cherry got in trouble for saying, “Why is no one wearing a poppy these days?” I live in Mississauga, and very few people wear a poppy. Downtown Toronto? Forget about it, nobody’s wearing a poppy. I agree, I’m not wearing one either, but part of that is because I literally don’t go to malls where they sell them, or run into veterans selling them. So, there’s this weird, shaky feeling, a little bit of guilt that I should probably be rocking a poppy too.

It’s just wild how there’s been this decline in Remembrance Day as you grow older. I guess maybe it’s work; I don’t know what it is. But there is this distancing from that cherished tradition of paying homage to the veterans of World War II, World War I, and everything in between. Part of Remembrance Day was to remember so you don’t repeat those mistakes again. Yet, here we are as a world, continually on the brink of World War III.

So, how much does remembering what happened to prevent what’s going to happen actually play into this? Because the world’s pretty giddy when it comes to World War III, not gonna lie. The number of people who will support Israel’s war on Palestine, or support all these weird conflicts around the world by voting in politicians who indirectly support these things… where do we draw the line? We’re remembering so we don’t prevent, but it feels like every day we’re just at the brink, that nail that could break the camel’s back type situation, of going back to World War I. So, where does this remembrance play a factor in all of this, man? It’s wild.

We’re honoring veterans, and we’re honoring Sikh veterans. Obviously, people like to say, “You know, we fought for your freedom.” So many Sikhs died with the British in Canada fighting for Canada. It’s weird that we get erased from that history, but what are you gonna do? Anyways, it’s a little somber one today. We’re just getting back in the mix of things; we’re going to get back in the flow. Y’all have a great Remembrance Day! Hopefully, you guys have a moment to reflect on the world. I feel like if you’re not going to remember the wars (because so many of us are so far removed), reflect on all the wars, all the conflicts today, and just where we’re at as a society at best. Anyways, yo, till the next one, peace!

Ai Header Image Prompt: High quality, high level of detail, abstract digital art banner. A central, ethereal, and highly stylized abstract poppy, subtly decaying into digital particles and faint, dissolving lines. The background is a somber, abstract landscape of muted grays, dusty purples, and deep blues, with hints of a faded, melancholic crimson. Geometric and organic forms intertwine, suggesting fragmented memories and quiet reflection. The art style should evoke a sense of deep contemplation and historical echoes, not overtly AI-looking.
