Are Echo Chambers Inevitable? - Monday! ✌️
Morning, everyone! Made it back late last night from Ottawa. Let me tell you, I was so thankful I had my winter tires on. The weather was nasty coming back. For a bit there, the snow was coming down hard. Driving in that kind of snow, I’d almost forgotten how bad it could be. It’s like, when it’s coming down like that, it’s hard not to get hypnotized by the snow just coming at you. You get stuck in a trance, and you’re just like, “Whoa!” It’s bad because you’re fearing zoning out. But anyway, we made it back alive and safe, so we’re thankful for that.
Have you all been hearing about echo chambers lately? Everyone’s been talking about them. Echo chambers are crazy because, obviously, they’re dangerous. You fall into an echo chamber, and all you know is what’s surrounding you. But is it inevitable? We, as humans, like being around other humans who think like us. We don’t like constantly hearing people who disagree with us. We surround ourselves a lot of times with people who, for a lot of their core values or core beliefs, are like us. It’s just natural, and we all drift towards our own echo chambers. I think it’s inevitable.
So, this whole notion that we should be seeking out other opinions… obviously, you should be reading other opinions, but how often do we actually want to engage with that consecutively? That’s the whole thing of finding niches. Being in a niche means you’re with people who agree or want to see more things like what you’re saying. So, echo chambers, in my opinion, are inevitable. There’s no getting around them. Social media only exasperates echo chambers because that’s what we want. That’s what’s going to keep us engaged.
I don’t know about all this negative talk about echo chambers. I think you’re kidding yourself if you’re not falling into an echo chamber yourself. On that note, it’s nice today. Let’s get back to work. Y’all have a great one. Till the next one, peace!
