Appreciating The Little Things Your Parents Did - Saturday!
Good morning, it’s Saturday! Hope you all have a dope Saturday planned. We have a long one today, but hey, we’ll get through it. One thing I’ve realized after becoming a parent is you start appreciating your own parents a lot more.
When you realize how kids are, you think, “Well, I was one of those kids too.” So you appreciate the effort your parents put into you. More than anything, you start appreciating the little things your parents did for you that you realize weren’t so easy. Taking your kids to sports every weekend? Not so easy. Putting them in and registering them in city programs like swimming and skiing? Again, not so easy. Those registration times are not so forgiving!
With us, my dad’s big thing was he always wanted us to be avid readers. So if we wanted anything, he’d be like, “Alright, read this book and then tell me what you read.” Or if we wanted to rent a video game for the weekend, it’s like, “Alright, I want you to read these two books this weekend.” Or if I wanted something else, “Alright, read the news and write a report on what you read.” Things like that just quickly added up, and I didn’t appreciate it at the time.
But then you think about it now, a Grade Three kid reading the newspaper and writing reports on what they read? Not so commonplace. And I’m telling you, I’m like, “Yo, maybe we got to subscribe to a newspaper.” And I want to kind of implement that with my kid. That was actually a pretty dope little strategy, and I’m starting to do that with my kid now. Whenever he gets home, it’s like, “Look, you got to read this, and then if you read all this stuff and you do your spelling test, you get a pack of Pokemon cards!” Until I realized that Pokemon cards were 10 bucks a piece, and now I’m like, “Alright, maybe we got to find something a little cheaper.”
Anyways, have a great day everyone, enjoy it! Peace!
