Shaheedi Purbh & Christmas? - Tuesday!
Good morning, everyone! It snowed, making for a beautiful, not-too-cold Tuesday morning. It’s Christmas Eve for those who celebrate, and yes, it’s going to be a white Christmas! Christmas is an interesting time, especially as a Sikh. While we don’t traditionally celebrate Christmas, growing up in the West means you’re constantly surrounded by the dominant culture and its festivities.
For Sikhs, this time of year is actually a somber and reflective season. It coincides with the Shaheedi of the Sahibzade, the children of the Tenth Guru. We honor the Shaheedi of the two elder Sahibzade who fell in combat, and then the two younger Sahibzade who were bricked alive by the Mughal Empire for refusing to convert to Islam. It’s a very somber time, yet at the same time, Sikhi is always Chardi Kalaa, always in high spirits!
So, it’s this interesting cultural confluence, this ‘culture war’ of sorts, where you’re honoring the Shaheedi while everyone around you is celebrating. You don’t want to be a downer, but it’s a time of reflection and remembrance. An interesting time, indeed.
Anyways, I hope you guys are having a dope day! I’m knee-deep in parenting today. I gotta teach my kids how to stop hitting each other! These guys are in 100% combat mode. Growing up, my brother and I used to fight a lot, but my kids are at a whole different level right now. I’m this close to just filming their fights and starting a freaking kids’ fight club YouTube channel or something! I mean, that would be hilarious, but also very, very troubling. I’d probably get a call from Child Services if that happened. But seriously, these kids just won’t stop fighting! It’s insane. I don’t know how to stop it right now. I’m at the point where I’m threatening them with boot camp! Like, yo, you guys keep this up, I’m sending you guys to boot camp! Though, that’s probably only going to make them worse. Maybe I need to get them into wrestling or something soon.
Hey, whatever, man. Y’all have a great day! Till the next one, peace!
