Maybe The Luddite Were Right?- Saturday!
Good afternoon, it’s Saturday! The world is changing, and I spent the entire morning standing outside in the cold with some bum gloves. My fingers were freezing, so forgive me if I’m a little late. But, I had a lot of time to think about the changing world we live in—the AI world, specifically. What is AI going to bring to this world? I feel like I’ve been super close to tech my entire life—computers, and Replit. In general, labor was one thing, but now AI replacing the next level of labor is a whole different thing. I do not trust AI.
I use AI here and there sparingly for weird little things, like, “Hey, can you summarize this?” or “Can you find this?” I use it like a search engine, which I think is a pretty good use case for AI. But, I haven’t yet been able to use AI for work, even though our work has now been like, “Hey, here are some AI tools you could use.” And I was just like, but then what is a human if all our thoughts are being done by a computer? If the computer is doing all the thinking for us, what’s the use? I thought our biggest piece of capital as a human was our brain and our creativity and all that kind of stuff. And now we’re so quickly and so desperately rushing to replace that. For what? What’s next then?
It makes no sense to me why we’re so eager for computers to replace mundane tasks. Yes, it’s cool when you pull up some AI photos and have it illustrate some stuff, but I think everyone can admit it’s not something you can sell or foster. And yeah, there are people selling and fostering it. Facebook got to the point where they were like, “Hey, let’s just use AI to foster engagement on our platforms.” They made thousands of fake AI profiles that were just interacting with people, selling products, and making you think that they were real. What is the point of all this? What’s the point of AI, in general? We’re not simplifying work for us; we’re replacing the act of thinking.
I guess people would argue, or have been arguing since the dawn of tech in general, like calculators replaced the need to know how to count, and phone contact lists ruined our memory. Maybe the Luddites were right, you know what I mean? Some people were saying that the tech Luddites… we got this whole story wrong. Luddites weren’t mad about tech; they were mad about technology replacing them. They were mad that we were replacing human labor. And yeah, who knows? I don’t know. That’s where I’m at right now. Anyway, y’all have a great Saturday! Until the next one, peace.
