Embrace Your Nobody-ness - Tuesday!
Yo, what’s good, how you guys doing? It’s Tuesday! I stumbled across one of those Alan Watts videos you see on Instagram and TikTok. You know, the ones where he’s saying stuff like, “One of the greatest tragedies in life is that you will always be loved more than you will ever know.” He’s got that deep philosophical voice, and it’s one of those really positive, ‘if you’re depressed, think about life this way’ type videos. He’s just like, ‘There’s someone out there who likes your smile, who’s thinking about you right now. You matter!’
But here’s where my head goes: What if there’s nobody? And why do you need someone to be thinking about you to think that you matter? What if there’s nobody out there who cares about you, who cares what you accomplish? You’re indifferent, a speck of sand in the middle of nowhere on a beach that no one recognizes. Why is that such a bad thing? Why are we so uncomfortable being nothing?
I was just thinking, why is everybody so keen on wishing or hoping that there’s somebody or something that makes them significant? Why does that have to be the thing that uplifts us? Why can’t we be uplifted by the fact that we are insignificant? Why is it such a hard thing to accept that in the mass collection of the universe, we’re like this atom that really no one recognizes?
I just don’t see why we gotta be something or someone to matter. Be nothing, be empty, and then be free! That’s where I’m at. Anti-Alan! And I don’t even hate Alan Watts, I actually love watching his videos, and I love stoic philosophy and that kind of stuff. But it’s this whole ‘you need to matter to be something’ thing that I just don’t get. Anyways, have a great Tuesday, man! Hope I didn’t totally bum you guys out. Till the next one, peace!
