But you know what else was insane? Last night’s Canada vs. USA hockey game! It really highlighted what’s missing in sports these days: good, decent rivalries. This rivalry has always been there, sure, but this was supposed to be a friendly All-Star exhibition. Three fights in the first nine seconds? These guys just set the tone!

The first two periods were unreal. The third period, the U.S. defense just smothered Canada, and the game kind of fell flat. Whatever, there’s a chance they’ll face off again in the finals if we can get past Finland. I’m looking forward to it. This Four Nations Cup might be the greatest thing the NHL has ever done.

Everyone’s saying the NBA needs to copy this, but can they? It’s tough. Maybe a team like Spain could spark something? You tell me what you think. What this Four Nations Cup is missing is Russia. I’m at a point where I’m not dying for any one team. If the Leafs lose, or the Raptors lose, whatever. I’m not that deeply invested, and I don’t think anyone ought to be, but maybe that’s because there’s no reason to be. My friend says the NBA is lacking because everyone cares about the name on the back of the jersey more than the logo on the front. It’s like, do you have a team, or do you just have a player you like?

We need to bring rivalries back into sports. Soccer’s the only sport that really has that intense fan base animosity. If we had that in hockey again—maybe it exists and I’m just ignorant because I’m not following it daily—but the NBA definitely doesn’t have it at all.
