Skype Is Shutting Down!? - Monday!

Good morning, everyone! It’s Monday, and apparently, Skype is shutting down. I’m a little sad about this, even though I haven’t used Skype in like 10-15 years. Seeing that news just made me feel old, you know? I don’t know if Skype means as much to other people as it does to me, but I remember using this app a lot, especially back in university. Cell phone plans weren’t what they are now; long distance calls were expensive. Even calling from London, Ontario, to Brampton would cost you a ton. So, even though we had cell phones, the plans just weren’t there yet. We all had Skype on our computers, using it to call our parents.

Skype was also one of the first to do video calling, which was awesome. Even though we mostly just did regular phone calls, the video option was cool. And remember those Skype plugs? You could plug your phone in and call India for cheap using Skype. My parents were all about that. They also had those calling cards, which were cool, but those Skype plugs were truly innovative. You just plug your phone in and suddenly you’re making long-distance calls for super cheap. It was like the first real big VoIP thing, and now everything’s VoIP.

Seeing that Skype is shutting down just got me feeling nostalgic. I guess Microsoft bought Skype and decided that since no one’s really using Skype anymore, they’re going all-in on Microsoft Teams. I feel like Skype really dropped the ball when COVID hit. They were one of the first big apps that did group meetings and all that, and then they just disappeared. Zoom came in and everyone switched, even though Skype was already doing what we needed. It’s a weird situation, right? You have this app that does exactly what you want, and then it loses out to a new app that comes along and, presumably, does it a little better or differently.

Microsoft’s shutting Skype down and replacing it with Teams going forward. I don’t blame Microsoft; you don’t want two competing apps in your portfolio. You want all the users on one app. But I’ve got to say, I hate Teams. I’m more of a Google Meet guy, but that’s irrelevant. Skype is shutting down. Do you guys have any fond memories of using Skype, or am I just stuck in this “man, that app was good” mindset? I was actually using Skype when I was applying to jobs remotely. I’d buy a local number in that city on Skype and use that on my resume. But I guess now you have eSIMs that do that. Oh well, the world is changing. I can’t even blame it. What’s an app that I don’t use anymore shutting down matter anyway? Guess that’s the problem with it. Anyway, y’all take it easy until the next one!

Ai Header Image Prompt: Abstract digital art. A high-quality, highly detailed rendering of digital connection and nostalgic dissolution. Glowing, intricate tendrils of information and interconnected abstract circuit patterns in deep blues and muted purples subtly dissipate into a soft, ethereal background of warm amber and peach tones. The composition evokes a contemplative sense of technological evolution and the gentle fading of a once-prominent digital service. Elements appear to organically dissolve and fragment, symbolizing the end of an era while maintaining a fluid, almost painterly digital aesthetic. No human figures, hands, limbs, or text whatsoever are present. The style is sophisticated, clean, and futuristic, carefully designed to avoid an overtly AI-generated appearance.
