Did Covid Break People? - Monday!

Yo, good morning! Did COVID break people? Did it break society? I was just thinking about this, because I think back to COVID, it’s been five years now, which is kind of insane. It feels like it was so long ago.

Anyway, I got to thinking, COVID for me was a great time. We got to stay home, we got to work from home, we got to play so many games. All the friends linked up, Warzone was popping! For me, COVID wasn’t this nightmare scenario; it was actually a lot of fun. We just had our second kid then, so it all kind of worked out because we had to be home anyway, which gave us more time with them.

But then for people who are self-employed, people whose companies and livelihoods were in the service industries and all of a sudden they’re laid off and at home, I imagine it was quite a different experience for them. I think for them, there was this growing anxiety of, “What am I going to do? Am I even going to survive this financially?”

I was reading this article about a chef who had a restaurant in Toronto that opened up during COVID, and he was talking about the PTSD he has now. Anytime he hears about a new strain or some sort of disease, he immediately thinks, “Oh, are we going through this again?” I realized I never really sympathized or empathized too much with that group.

But I’m always thinking about how, after COVID, political extremism heightened. People’s polarity on where they were politically increased, at least within the people I knew. I knew people who never paid attention to the news or politics who all of a sudden had really strong political opinions and even deep, conspiratorial ideas of what’s going on in the world. I was like, “Where is this all coming from?” You used to not give a damn about any of this.

Then I realized, it was COVID! These guys were self-employed; these guys had a financial link to their livelihoods that was constantly in jeopardy. They were obviously looking for some story, some narrative to latch onto. I’m not saying they’re wrong, because some of the stuff that they discovered or learned or shared is right. But this polarity, more than anything, is what I got interested in during COVID. It triggered this deep hate and distrust of the government, maybe even society as a whole.

So, I’m just thinking, did COVID break people? Did it break you? What was your experience during COVID? How did y’all survive? Do you ever think back like, “Man, that was a horrible time,” or, “Man, that was a decent time”? What say you? Share your thoughts. Peace!

Ai Header Image Prompt: High quality, intricate, detailed digital art illustration in a style that blends surreal abstraction with elements of neo-expressionism and geometric digital art. The image conceptually explores societal transformation and individual experience. The composition features a central, fragmented yet cohesive human silhouette or form, rendered with translucent layers and glowing lines, symbolizing introspection and the profound questions of a changing world. One half of the scene leans towards calm, interconnected digital patterns and soft, inviting light, subtly hinting at domestic comfort, home, and virtual leisure. The other half transitions into sharper, fractured lines, chaotic digital noise, and cooler, more intense hues, representing anxiety, societal division, and uncertainty. These two contrasting visual narratives subtly intertwine and overlap, creating a sense of duality and the complex, evolving nature of human connection. The overall mood is contemplative with an underlying current of tension. Crucially, any discernible human limbs, hands, or fingers, even in their abstract interpretation, are rendered with natural anatomy and flow, ensuring they appear organic and free from AI-typical distortions. The lighting is atmospheric and layered, avoiding a flat, overtly 'AI' look. No text or bold titles are present on the image.
