AI Friends??
Alright, what’s good everyone? So, Mark Zuckerberg says the average person has three friends…as in, like, actual friends. And based on his Facebook studies, he thinks most people want 15. Now, I was worried that I wasn’t in focus there for a minute, but hopefully, I’m good now. Fifteen seems kinda high, right? Like, acquaintances? Sure, most people know of 15 people. But friends? People you can rely on? People you can call at 3:00 a.m.? If you’ve got three of those people, you’re golden. Honestly, I don’t know how many you need. If you’ve got one? You’re freaking lucky.
But according to Zuckerberg’s infinite wisdom, since people only have three friends but supposedly crave fifteen, we need to use AI to supplement those other twelve. I don’t know about you, but that just seems super dystopian to me. That’s where my brain just freezes up on tech. I love tech, love everything about it, but this? This is where I’m like, “Alright, you guys have lost me. I’m done. I’m getting off this train. It’s been nice.”
Why can’t we encourage people to just go meet people in real life? There are social clubs, sports, gyms… go to the gym, join jiu-jitsu, play baseball, play golf! People get older, get tied up with kids, but there are still options! Go to the guarda (daycare). You can make social connections at the guarda. Go to church, your masjid, wherever you go! Just stop this online reliance. Uber a friend? This is breaking my brain.
AI assistants that tell you the weather, help you prep, tell you the time and calendar? Cool. But friends? Someone you sit around and talk to? They’re talking about AI therapists now, which is also strange. And a growing number of young people are turning to AI for therapy. It’s mind-boggling, bobblingly dumb! Maybe I’m just becoming a boomer, but the world that used to make sense to me no longer makes sense to me. Am I alone here? Do you guys agree? Are we entering strange times?
In Zuckerberg’s defense, he acknowledged that people aren’t ready for this yet, and that we need to change the social norms and language around AI before people are willing to invite them into their homes as lovers and companions. No, we do not need to change the language on this! We need to tell people to get off their butts, go outside and talk to real people, touch grass, get some sun! That’s what we need to encourage people to do, not soften the language.
I don’t know, I feel like I might be losing my mind here. Anyways, let me know what you guys think! Till the next one. Peace.
