How Ya'll Feel About Travelling To America?

Yo, how do y’all feel about traveling to the States? I’m bringing this up because there was this survey published that said 52% of Canadians think traveling to America right now isn’t safe for all people. I think the wording here matters, because they weren’t asked if they feel safe, but if they think all people should feel safe. It’s a broader question.

And to that question, I say, yeah, there are certain people who probably shouldn’t feel safe going to the States. I’m kind of in that boat where I don’t know how I feel about it personally. I’m not afraid to go, but I tend to avoid it because of everything going on. They’re arresting people with green cards. Even if you have a green card, but you’re protesting something the American government doesn’t agree with, they’ll stop you.

I’ve heard both anecdotally and personally about people getting stopped at the border and having their phones searched. I don’t want anyone going through my phone! And then they say, ‘Just carry a burner phone.’ Well, they still hassle you about that, too.

I know a lot of people who travel to the States with no problem. They don’t understand why everyone’s so hesitant and fearful. For me, it’s always been like this. It’s not just because Trump was in power. Since I was a kid, I always felt a little uncomfortable going to the States because the racism I felt there has always been a little harsher than what I’ve felt here. But obviously, with Trump, there was a more pronounced level of… well, things happening. They’re detaining people if they’re pro-Palestine, anti-Trump, or if they’ve said anything the government doesn’t like.

Once white people started getting detained at the border, that’s when I knew things were really messed up. I get that people like me, people of color, getting stopped… I get it to a degree. That’s always been somewhat of American policy. But once white people started getting detained and held for 14 days, I was like, ‘If y’all aren’t safe, what luck do I have?’

I know with the Leafs playing in Florida, a bunch of people make that trip down, and they’re like, ‘I don’t get why you guys are so scared.’ I don’t know, man. For me, there’s a level of ‘if I can avoid it, I will.’ There are a lot of places here I can go. I can always go to Mexico if I want somewhere warm. And there are plenty of places here I can go golfing, now that it’s spring. I don’t have to go to Florida to get that fix anymore in the winter.

But I don’t know. How about you guys? Are we all just being scaredy-cats? Or is it just like, ‘Whatever, man? If they get you, what can you do anyway?’ I know a lot of Americans are like, ‘You guys are being weird. Nothing’s going to happen to you as long as your paperwork’s good.’ But the news tells a different story. Maybe I should just stop watching the news altogether. But I don’t know. What are you guys thinking? Let me know. Till the next one!

Ai Header Image Prompt: A solitary figure stands at a symbolic, fractured threshold, their form subtly deconstructed and interwoven with translucent, glowing streams of abstract digital data, reminiscent of data packets or network lines. One anatomically correct hand is held up, perhaps subtly shielding their face or interacting with a ghostly, fragmented representation of a smartphone, which emits a soft, pixelated glow. The background is an atmospheric gradient, transitioning from cooler, muted tones (suggesting North) to warmer, slightly more intense hues (suggesting South), divided by the abstract digital currents. The scene evokes a profound sense of unease, scrutiny, and vulnerability in a hyper-connected world, where personal boundaries are blurred. The art style is a sophisticated blend of contemporary abstract painting and detailed digital art, featuring dynamic brushstrokes and precise, geometric digital overlays. High quality, highly detailed, anatomically correct hands, fingers, and limbs. No text overlay.
