The Flight Attendant WIN You Didn't See Coming
Yo, it looks like the Air Canada flight attendants won the battle. I don’t know if they won the war, but they definitely won a significant battle, man. In a rare turn of events, workers actually seem to have gotten what they wanted: to be paid for the crucial prep work they do before a flight. And it looks like they won that fight!
The fact that they weren’t getting paid for these duties blows my mind. Honestly, this is one of the first times I’ve seen the collective public truly take the side of the workers. A lot of times, we think we’re pro-worker, but then we’re like, “Hmm, maybe you guys need to chill.” Think about the Canada Post strike, for instance. When those workers went on strike, many of us were just thinking, “Yeah, this is just inconvenient, man. What are you talking about, more pay? Your company’s losing money! How can they pay you more?” We weren’t exactly all on the Canada Post workers’ side back then.
But with the Air Canada flight attendants, the situation was different. The injustice of these employees working unpaid time for essential duties seemed to resonate. I mean, Air Canada itself makes multi-billion dollar profits. They’re a profitable company; they’re not running on deficits or barely getting by. And their CEO, president, whatever you want to call him, Michael Rousseau, gets a staggering $12 million a year. And he’s out there complaining about compensation or work-life balance? Dude, if you’re making $12 million a year, you’re not allowed to complain about that!
I feel like even the public whose flights were cancelled or who were victims of the whole ordeal generally sided with the workers. They weren’t saying, “Hey man, I can’t believe these flight attendants are costing us this much.”
What’s crazy now is that this victory for the flight attendants—who were on strike—will undoubtedly inspire other layers of Air Canada workers. They’re probably looking at this like, “Okay, hold on. If they got a bag, let’s see if there’s something we can negotiate and get a little bit more of that.” It’s wild that these companies can make billions of dollars in profits and not simply spread that wealth back to their employees first. I get it, you’ve got to give it to the shareholders and the capitalists who fund you, but there’s got to be a point where you say, “Hey, let’s take care of our people first.” But that’s not the world we live in, I guess.
Anyway, man, tell me in the comments whose side you were on in all of this. Peace!
