The Sports Fan Trap: Why Emotional Investment SUCKS (Blue Jays Playoffs & The Bandwagoner's Paradox)
Yoooo! It’s been a minute. I almost kicked this off by diving into the whole “PSYOP” surrounding Bandi Chhor Divas and Diwali, but I caught myself. “Shane,” I thought, “it’s been too long. Don’t come out here controversial, don’t rage bait, don’t do that.” So, instead, let’s talk about something that truly is grinding my gears lately: being a sports fan absolutely sucks. More specifically, getting emotionally invested in sports sucks. All of a sudden, the deep emotional commitment you have to your team, over an outcome you have zero control over, becomes incredibly draining and, honestly, kind of maddening.
Like right now, my beloved Blue Jays are on the cusp of going to the World Series. If they win Game Seven tonight, we’re in, and I’ll be ecstatic! And here’s the kicker: I’m someone who just jumped on this bandwagon a week and a half ago. I wasn’t watching this team during the regular season! Sure, I grew up a huge Jays fan, but as an adult, life happens. I no longer commit to watching a full regular season of any sport. Why put yourself through that grind when you can just dive in during the playoffs and enjoy the thrilling runs?
Part of me does feel a little guilty about this, though. I know the loyal fans who stick around through all the ups and downs of the regular season—they deserve these wins a little bit more, they deserve to be a little happier. But I find myself getting just as happy! It makes me feel like I’m cheating the system in some way. I guess it’s the ultimate bandwagoner’s paradox. Every game I watch, every highlight reel, I learn more about the team and each player’s history, getting a little more invested. Soon, when the season inevitably ends and we trade people away, I’ll be sitting there thinking, “Oh, I can’t believe we got rid of that guy; he was so good!” while everyone else says, “No, but he wasn’t consistent…”
All this to say, watching sports is a huge emotional investment that I honestly wish I was smart enough to avoid. But here I am, making it anyway. Go Jays Go! Hopefully everything pans out tonight, and we’ll be celebrating a World Series appearance! I’m just looking forward to ordering some Pizza Nova and enjoying the game. Anyway, it’s good to be back. Until the next one, peace!
