Is Ronda Rousey The GOAT?
Ronda Rousey recently said she feels hurt that she’s not recognized as the greatest female fighter of all time, even though she believes she is. Is she underappreciated?
I definitely remember Ronda Rousey’s run in the UFC. It was a sick run. She was like stealing everybody’s arms with armbars left and right. No woman’s arm was safe, and she was finishing fights in like 30 seconds. She was dominant!
Then she got knocked out by Holly Holm. A lot of people point to that fight and say Ronda complains that she wasn’t at her best. But everyone knew going into that Holly Holm fight that she was going to get outboxed because she had no striking. They tried to pump up her striking in the promos, but everyone knew her striking was ass.
She feels that people didn’t care about helping her communicate what she was trying to communicate. They just cared about getting as many clicks as possible, so she couldn’t trust anyone to speak for her. She released a book to communicate everything.
When you’re early on and you’re really good with submissions, or you have one style that no one has figured out, eventually everyone catches up. She was great for as long as she was, but people figured out the plan to beat her.
She said, and I love this Mike Tyson quote, “Only people that are truly great can recognize greatness. I wanted to be so great that even an idiot couldn’t deny it.” She was great; I don’t take anything away from her greatness. I just think her time ran out. People figured out the style and the formula for beating her after Holly Holm.
After going into pro wrestling, she realized that retiring undefeated and taking the equity that she had with her wouldn’t have been what was best for the sport. Even though she knows that she’s better than all the other women by a long shot, taking her equity away from the sport would tarnish her legacy. It wouldn’t make everybody take the women after her seriously. If she left undefeated, everyone after that would be like, “But could they beat Ronda? Could they be Ronda?” When you lose, everyone’s like, “Oh, we’ve seen Ronda get beat.” So it fades away, and is better for the sport. I agree with that.
Then there’s Brock Lesnar. She hates what Brock did for the UFC. Brock walked into the UFC when the heavyweight division was at its weakest. Frank Mir and Randy Couture were top champs. That’s not to take away from Frank Mir, but that division later was the weakest it had been in a long time. If Brock fought Fedor, it would be something else. But she refuses to give Brock too much respect. Randy Couture is not a true heavyweight. Beating Frank Mir doesn’t make him one of the great heavyweights of all time.
