The Max Holloway Knockout - UFC 300
Alright, let’s talk about UFC 300, specifically Max Holloway vs. Justin Gaethje. To be honest, I haven’t been keeping up with UFC as much lately. Life gets hectic after marriage and kids, and it’s hard to dedicate the time needed to follow it closely. UFC seemed to shift from monthly stacked pay-per-views to a constant stream of diluted events, which made it tough to stay current.
When you fall behind, it’s hard to jump back in because you lose track of the fighters and their stories. For me, knowing a fighter’s background is a big part of enjoying the sport. So, when UFC 300 rolled around, I was a bit indifferent. Back in the day, my buddies and I would buy every single pay-per-view, cramming into a room to watch. We were hooked from UFC 30 to around UFC 200, but after that, things got blurry.
Then, my buddy hit me up about UFC 300. We’re both grown up now, with our own homes and families. I almost bailed, but I didn’t want to be that guy. Plus, I’ve become a bit of a hermit lately, so I decided to go. I’m glad I did because it lived up to the hype. The Max Holloway vs. Justin Gaethje fight was incredible!
I’ll be honest, I tapped out before the main event started. It was nearly 1:00 AM, and I couldn’t hang. I was worried about traffic and drunk drivers. So, I headed home and later saw the highlights of Pereira’s knockout. I was like, “Damn, that would have been fun to watch!” But no regrets.
But man, Holloway knocking out Gaethje like that? Insane! And he’s the only one to ever knock Gaethje down! I was rooting for Max because he’s a Raptors fan. As a fellow Raptor fan, I can’t go against him.
What’s crazy is that Holloway was dominating the fight, up 4-1. He just needed to survive, but he went for it in the last ten seconds. True gladiator! I’ve seen a lot of knockouts, but the way Holloway crumpled Gaethje was reminiscent of Lyoto Machida vs. Rashad Evans. Crazy!
Someone made a compilation of fighter reactions and I saw that we had a similar reaction, respectfully loud, since there were kids sleeping upstairs.
It’s wild that Max has never been knocked down like that before. Some people who I don’t even know were shocked by the knockout. That was the ultimate holy [expletive] moment of all time! He has the fight won and is in there with one of the most dangerous [expletive] fighters, and he says let’s do this.
There aren’t many UFC fights recently that I’ve enjoyed this much live. Maybe Khabib vs. McGregor was the last one. I’m looking forward to seeing Conor fight at 302. I grew up watching him. Sugar Sean is cool too, but I’m all about Max. I loved his post-fight interview where he said, “It takes two to tango.” He gave props to Gaethje, calling him a “true bad mother[expletive]” and thanking him for the opportunity.
Also, Holloway points directly to the center of the Octagon. Nate Diaz does that too! I also caught Alexa Grasso’s reaction to the Holloway knockout, she was shocked. Max Holloway’s corner deserves credit for preparing him. Every time Justin dipped his head, Max threw a spinning back kick. The fighter reaction times are insane, seeing the dip and throwing the kick in a split second.
Alex Pereira vs. Jon Jones? I’d watch that 100%. Jones has been fighting for as long as I can remember. His elbows are deadly. I’ve been critical of Jones in the past, questioning if he’s one of the greatest, but he is. It was a slip, not a knockdown, earlier in the fight.
UFC 300 was amazing. I’m glad UFC is back on my radar. Maybe it’s time to dive back in, catch up on the fighters, and form some new opinions. I remember playing the UFC video game on Dreamcast and that got me into UFC in the first place. Ultimate Fighter saved UFC. The spectacle, the fight! I even signed up for Jiu-Jitsu for a bit. Video games help sports. The THQ game was sick.
