Who Won - Kendrick vs Drake 🤔
Yo, what’s up, everyone? Welcome to this episode. First off, if you follow me on Twitter, I sincerely apologize. I know I went overboard with the Kendrick Lamar vs. Drake beef. I was all in, retweeting everything. My thumbs are still sore! So, yeah, sorry for being so sucked into it.
My introduction to hip-hop was in the mid-90s, the Tupac, West Coast vs. East Coast era, the Death Row days. That’s the hip-hop I grew up in. Then, in the 2000s, it was G-Unit versus the world, The Game dropping 300 bars, Eminem blasting everyone. I love a good rap beef. I even watched those beef DVDs back in the early 2000s. I was so into it, I had a plastic Death Row chain! That’s how deep I was, repping on the suburbs.
It’s been a while since we had a genuine beef like this. I can’t remember one this captivating before maybe Eminem vs. Machine Gun Kelly? And Drake’s usually at the heart of these beefs. Drake vs. Meek Mill was awesome; Drake slaughtered Meek. Pusha T vs. Drake? Drake got slaughtered. Now, we have Kendrick vs. Drake and J. Cole although Cole bowed out early out of respect for everyone involved. It’s been a minute since I’ve enjoyed a beef this much, and I’m a vegetarian, so that’s saying something.
I think the beef is over. They probably won’t dap each other up for ten years unless they drop a single next week. Drake released “The Heart Part 6,” where he basically said, “You beat your wife; I’m not a pedophile,” and then peaced out. He sounded petty; he lost, tapped out, realizing it wasn’t good for business.
Here’s the thing about Drake: I don’t think he lost per se. Kendrick won lyrically, musically, and in entertainment value. But Drake was always going to lose because Drake went into this beef as the underdog, in my opinion. I didn’t foresee Drake winning. It took Drake 13 or 17 days to drop his response, “Push Ups,” and we all thought there’s no way Drake’s going to fight this guy. But “Push Ups” was a dope track. When Kendrick replied with “Euphoria” just a few days later, that’s when things got crazy, and folks started reading into every single line. “Euphoria” was such a nerdy track, dissecting all those lines.
Kendrick dropped allegations that Drake has a hidden child, is a pedophile, a coward, and a culture vulture. Some people said, “We already knew all this.” But here’s how I see it. In a real rap beef, like a battle rap scenario, the key is the “Oh s***, I can’t believe he said that!” reaction. It’s not just about spreading the truth. Is what you’re saying truth-adjacent and believable? Is Drake hiding a child believable? Yes. Is Drake being a pedophile believable? No, knock on wood. But Drake’s track record made people wonder.
Did Drake saying Kendrick beats his wife elicit more of an “Oh s” response than Kendrick saying Drake is a pedophile? For me, no. Kendrick had that “Oh s, I can’t believe he said that!” moment. Then there are the mind games. Drake drops “Family Matters” as his reply to Kendrick’s back-to-back tracks “Euphoria” and “6:16 in LA”. “Family Matters” had hidden meanings in the visuals, not so much in the lyrics.
But then Kendrick drops “The Heart Part 6”, and you’re like, “Dude…” That track was so dark! He wrote letters to Drake’s family members, saying Drake’s abusing women. What can Drake really say to respond to that? When Drake dropped “The Heart Part 6”, it was clear he accepted defeat. Drake fans might disagree, but that’s how I saw it. In this battle, Kendrick stole the big moments from Drake.
“Not Like Us” is going to haunt Drake all summer. You can’t escape that track this summer. So, Kendrick won. Drake, no one expected him to win. But standing toe-to-toe with someone you’re not supposed to stand toe-to-toe with… it’s like Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor. McGregor had no business in that ring, but he lasted and landed a few punches so that fight gave him more respect.
Drake got his ass kicked, but I respect him a bit more for lasting as long as he did. “Push Ups” was a great track, one I’ll listen to a few more times. “Not Like Us” and “Push Ups” will stand out. “The Heart Part 6” might get skipped.
Drake is bigger than just Drake; he is an empire. He’s Universal Music’s number one or two guy. They’re not going to let him lose. There’s too much money invested in him, partnerships with Nike, the NBA, and the NHL. When Kendrick calls him a pedophile, true or not, that’s not something those partners want to be affiliated with.
So, if Drake didn’t have that knockout punch, he better throw in the towel and get this fight over with to work on a new PR angle and get people talking about something else. The brands sure had those calls in Drake’s office.
YouTube, Instagram, and Twitter also won. Every reaction video went up on YouTube, and the traffic these tracks generated for those sites was insane. It surpassed every circle; my gaming circles, anime circles, and sports circles were talking about it. This was a culturally big moment.
As a whole, everybody won. It ended the way we expected, but I respect Drake a little bit more because he stood toe-to-toe for longer than I thought he would. He got knocked out, but he lasted. I respect Drake a little more from this and Kendrick will use this to cement his legacy. I think that’s that.
So, yeah, that’s all I wanted to say. Let me know in the comments below what you think. Drop a like, drop a sub if you’re into this kind of stuff. Peace!
