Diljit Dosanjh At the MET Gala!
Yo, Diljit Dosanjh at the Met Gala! You guys have probably seen the videos; it’s all over the internet. Finally, some positive news for a change! I feel like it’s been really gloom and doom lately, but Diljit at the Met Gala was pretty dope.
It took me a minute because I didn’t really understand what the Met Gala was about. I see these pictures every year with Kanye, the Kardashians, all these superstars, rap stars, basketball players, in some absurd costumes. I’m like, what the hell is going on? Why is this considered the epitome of fashion? Then I realized that the Met Gala is actually a costume party, and I was like, “Oh, well, I guess that makes sense.” I guess they have themes that everyone tries to costume around, and it’s a giant fundraiser for the Museum of Costume and Design or something. Apparently, that makes sense now. It doesn’t seem as absurd or dystopian when it gets framed like that.
But Diljit Dosanjh, the epic D, was there, and he represented! He’s the first Punjabi superstar celebrity at one of these things, which I guess is a big deal. People are telling me it’s a big deal, so I believe them. Based on the number of times I’ve seen this on Instagram, I believe y’all. It’s a big deal! And yo, he showed up! He came in looking like a Punjabi Raja, man. This guy was wearing his six, freaking [Sikhi] akin, had the Punjab flag on the back, had Ura, you know, the Gurmukhi on the back. He’s representing! I love it! He probably told his costume designer, “Yo, what is it that you want to go for?” He’s like, “I want to represent Punjab. I want to represent Punjabiat.”
I’m happy to see this, man. I think he did great. I saw someone comment, “I was kind of scared there. I thought Diljit was selling out. It’s good to see him back in this.” And I was like, what do you mean sell out? They’re like, “You know, he was jumping in with the Bollywood elite.” And I’m like, let’s be honest, though, he is a Bollywood elite. There shouldn’t be a question about it. He’s Punjabi, and he’s a Bollywood elite. What we were getting afraid of, I guess, was if he was going to sell out because he performed at the Ambani wedding type thing, and it’s like, how can he be going against these…? I’m like, look, man, you gotta get paid. You gotta live in the waters you live, but at the same time, as long as you show and show love for the rivers from which you came, that’s all that I think really matters.
I’ve never really gone too deep into the whole [Desi] thing. I know it goes back and forth within Pontic circles sometimes, but those circles fluctuate a lot, and a lot of those circles don’t even care about this kind of stuff. So, to get too wrapped up in celeb culture like that from the [Punjabi] standpoint, I don’t think makes sense. But from a Punjabiat standpoint, and just like him being a Punjabi superstar doing the things he does like the Met Gala, Coachella, he’s really breaking through in Western celeb culture, which is why everyone gets so excited because it’s this merging of worlds. This amalgamation… I can write these words better than I can speak them; I should just stop using them. I think it was really dope to see, and more representation like this, I think, is only better for the culture. Anyways, what do you guys think? Till the next one. Peace!
