Jus Reign RETURNS With NEW Show - Late Bloomer
Yo, looks like Jus Reign is back… well, kind of. It’s been five years since we last heard from him, and in that time, we’ve seen the rise of TikTok, the fall of Thanos, a disastrous worldwide pandemic, the farmers’ protest in Punjab, and the Toronto Raptors becoming NBA champions! Yeah, all that happened since the last time this guy posted a video on YouTube.
There was no goodbye or love letter to his fans when he left, just radio silence on social media accounts and a complete exile from the public eye. It’s been rumored since he left that he’d been working on a TV series, which seems to be the case. He’s dropped the title, “Late Bloomer,” which is set to air on Crave on January 19th. He’s also recently dropped a teaser. The clip shows Jus Reign on an elevator as other characters enter, until he finally tries to leave, at which point he’s held back. What I can only assume is somewhat of a nod to the famous Michael Corleone line from The Godfather Part III: “Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!”
The few published details surrounding the show describe it as an eight-part series loosely inspired by Jus Reign’s life as a Punjabi Sikh millennial and online celebrity navigating the intersection of cultural traditions and contemporary life in North America, which has me half expecting something akin to The Goldbergs and Everybody Hates Chris. With an entire generation having grown up on his YouTube skits, I’m curious to see how well the TV show delivers on fan expectations and how well this new style of storytelling will be received versus the traditional vloggy, skit-style comedy that his fans grew up on.
Crave, to its credit, has produced and fostered some great local content with Letterkenny and Shoresy, so I’m hoping this finds similar success. As one of the godfathers of the Punjabi YouTube scene alongside AK and Lilly Singh, it’s hard not to be curious as to what he has in store. It wasn’t until these last few years that I really appreciated the cultural impact that his videos left on a generation, meeting kids now in their 20s who were heavily inspired by his work and just how much of their memes are derived from Jus Reign’s work.
If this show is indeed somewhat of a biopic, I hope it doesn’t shy away from some of the controversial aspects of his career, such as the criticism that his videos made fun at the expense of the community or that he wasn’t representing or pushing Sikh causes enough. Some of which may have been fair, while other aspects totally overblown. It’ll be interesting to watch, having witnessed the entire era from the outside, and cool to get that inside peek. Who knows? Maybe this is the creative format switch he needs from his original sketch style to get back in the mix. Either way, it’s dope to see a Punjabi Sikh creative shine, so I’ll be tuning in on the 19th, as I suspect many will, just to see what he’s been cooking up.
Anyways, I’m curious to know what your thoughts are. Leave a comment below if you plan on tuning in, if you have any expectations for the show, if you’re looking forward to it, or if you’ve moved on. Let me know that too. Please like and subscribe to these videos. I’ll probably be making more of these weekly, I hope. Happy New Year! Hope you guys have a great 2024. Hopefully, we get back to this channel more this year than we did last, and hopefully, we keep producing more content. Till then, peace!
